Mindfulness is the practice of placing our full attention/focus, on purpose, to the present moment- without judgement, the practice of ‘being aware’ through self-awareness & awareness of others and our surroundings, through observations of thoughts, feelings/emotions, behaviours, and the physical world around us using our five senses: touch, taste, sight, smell, and sound. Paying full attention, focus, and open awareness of these in the present moment without judgment.

Mindfulness is most often an ‘informal practice’. They’re mostly quick & easy exercises that can be performed at any time of day, during any activity, without putting time aside, e.g., while doing the dishes, having a conversation, patting your pet, etc.

Mindfulness is a tool for ‘developing’ the skill of ‘being aware’ of the ‘present moment’- without judgement.

Meditation is another mindfulness technique; again, it is the practice of ‘being aware’, focusing attention on the present moment, on purpose, without judgment. Focusing your attention on one object, a thought, or sound/mantra, etc., for a longer time period to achieve the state of ‘being aware’ for longer and maintaining ‘mental stillness’ for an extended period.

Meditation is most often a ‘formal practice’. They’re mostly performed over longer periods, which require time set aside outside your everyday activities.

Meditation is a tool for ‘strengthening’ the skill of ‘being fully aware’- of the ‘present moment without judgement
